On Sunday 26th December I took my nephew and his stepbrother skiing and snow-shoeing on the beautiful powdery slopes of the Col du Feu. The place is very close to my village, only a 15 minute drive but it is a very scenic part to ski though the hills are not very high. We started skinning up from the foot of the unique ski run of the "Stade de neige" of the Col du Feu (for sure the smallest and cheapest ski resort in the Alps), we hiked up through the woods, then along a ridge onto a small plateau then along a second rounded ridge to the top which overlooks the stade de neige and a very nice untouched and powdery wall that we enjoyed signing with our skis. Then we stopped at the tiny chalet in the resort to enjoy an excellent vin chaud and a chat. A fantastic way to digest the Christmas dinners and drinks !

Wow ! It's snowing again in the Northern Alps, down to low altitude and that must be the first time in nearly a month. Great ! It's cheering me up !

Our schools here seem to be shutting for a week in February.... Not sure why, perhaps the teachers aren't getting enough holidays in the year.

Anyways, as Easter school hols is a little late this year (8th April I think) I was toying with the idea of sneaking away for a week in February.

So I've sent an E mail to a chalet in Les Brevieres, that I read some good reviews about, to see what accomodation that have.....

Here's hoping. smiling smiley

Due to the topsy turvey nature of the world I've spent most of the season so far in Australia getting a nice tan! Now I've moved to Iceland and am just waiting on my skis catching up with me so I can get up some of the awesome mountains they have over here. Pics to follow.

Hi Freeski,

This is today snow report from Les Arcs :

Situation actuelle : Station ouverte

Neige compacte means that the snow is packed and hard. Maybe they don't want to say it's a bit icy.

However the forecast is for fresh snow coming on Wednesday and Thursday. So for sure, the conditions will improve before next week.

Greetings from the Alps,

Lionel

Last ski tour was last Sunday above Morzine, at the Mines d'Or (Gold Mines) and snow was either hard and icy in places or quite soft on the South side of the hill.

XC skating was a nice change last month (12th December 10) when I went skiing in the Vanoise area, in a fantastic XC resort named Bessans in the Haute Maurienne vallée. Temperature was minus 10°C but the weather was gorgious with sunshine and blue sky. Snow was excellent. I hadn't been skating for years and the first lap was quite hard as I was hesitating. I had an instructor who gave me some hints and then I felt soon much better and at ease on skis. I really enjoyed having a change from ski touring.

Back on the thin planks after several years.

Tomorrow I will attend the Ski Jumping World Cup in the Jura Mountains. I invited my nephew Florian and it's a surprise trip for him (a birthday present) as I didn't tell him where we are going. There will be two races : ski jumping on the 118 metres ski jump in Chaux Neuve in the morning and then XC skiing race 10 kms in the afternoon. The atmosphere will be huge because the Frenchman Jason Lamy Chappuis is close to win the World Cup title and the race is taking place in his own village. Here are some pics of the Chaux Neuve ski jump and of today's competitions.

Just like for cycling, Jason Lamy Chappuis is wearing the Yellow jersey.

Tomorrow's races in Chaux Neuves will be broadcast on Eurosport if anyone is interested to watch them.

Greetings from the Jura mountains (for a change).

What a fantastic day at Chaux Neuve today. The weather was sunny but it was very cold (maybe minus 10°C or even less). The World Cup combined competition was very spectacular and leader of the WC Jason Lamy Chappuis won for the first time the combined ski jumping + 10 km XC skating in the region where he lives. So the atmosphere was awesome.

Here are some videos of today's competition.

And another cracking video with a helmet cam on Jason Lamy Chappuis' head when he jumped for a training session in Chaux-Neuve.

Well, I'm off to Tignes on Friday for what seems to be their worst season, snow wise, for many years.

Bugger. Where's the crying smillie....?

ColinTheCop, don't worry, i'm just back from a fortnight in Val d'Isere. Can tell you the pistes are stil in great nick. Pretty much all of the off-piste within the area is tracked out though. The le Foret,Pissaillas and Cugnai sectors of Val got about 15-20 cm at the start of last week that the rest of the Espace Killy missed out on.

Hope you enjoy your trip and are blessed with a nice dump of the white stuff.

Well I was in Avoriaz / Morzine in the Portes Du Soleil last week and I have never seen the Alpes so warm at this time of year, it was 18c one day according to a big thermometre sign!

Pistes were still in pretty good condition though as they had the snow cannons firing away overnight and the piste bashers putting it all about the place. There were still some pretty icy runs and brown patches poking through though.

I think the weather is going crazy at the moment!

Lucky you Andy ! Almost no snow in the Alps. I am fed up but today it's the first noticeable snowfall since Christmas. I hope we get more snow.
