Going airborne on a snowboard
Date Posted: 09.05hrs on Mon 21 Mar 11
Tried to do some small jumps yesterday on my snowboard on the bumps under the chair at the lecht but every time my board left contact with the snow I immediately turned 90 degrees and landed on my heel edge and very quickly onto my arse. i didnt jump high or anything as I wasnt going that fast but bam every time I tried I fell onto my arse.. Any ideas?
You need to have your board flat both on take-off and landing (not on an edge). This should stop you turning round 90 degrees. The other thing about jumps is the faster you go the easier it gets. Once you start landing right you want to move to ‘popping’ off your board rather than jumping. This is kind of like pinging a ruler off a desk, rather than jumping from the knees you use the board as a spring to pop off the snow. Sure there will be many youtube videos on the subject.

Have a think about what your shoulders are doing and where your head is pointing.
You are probably subconsciously rotating your shoulders down the slope in the direction you're looking, which in turn will pull your board to 90 degrees and then stall. Try popping like other people have suggested but concentrate on keeping your shoulders pointing up and down the slope.

Cheers for the ideas and tips. Thinking about it now I think it is a shoulders thing When straightlining it I always feel that I have to force my shoulders in line with the board other wise I start to veer to the left. I ride left foot forward. Next time away I will have to have a play around and see if I can make a difference. I might need to tweek my angles on my bindings.
