A9 Closure endangering life?
Date Posted: 16.29hrs on Thu 23 Dec 10
This evening with plummeting temperatures the A9 trunk road remains closed following a horrific crash almost 12 hours ago. Should the priority be to record ever minuscule possible bit of evidence for an accident very probably caused by the temperature?

Or should it be to re-open the road swiftly as possible once the emergency has been dealt with, such that other people attempting to travel North and South on a day that is usually particularly busy on the roads are not put at increased risk on length diversions on minor roads that aren't up to the traffic loading even in fine weather conditions?

Personally I think it's a bit off that the road remains shut into the dark evening - it's putting other lives needlessly at risk. Is it time to review police procedures and protocol in place for dealing with serious RTAs, as increasing technology seems to result in ever longer investigation closures?

with this particular crash surely shifting those lorries then making the road safe again (barrier repairs etc) will be taking the time. Agree in principle though that it takes far too long to reopen a road. Cue Colin the Cop.....

Having attended incidents such as this before in my line of work, I think the priority should be to properly investigate why this accident occured, so that it can hopefully be prevented in the future. let us not forget that a lorry driver lost his life, and another young chap is seriously injured.

Although the lengthy diversion will undoubtably delay many people,it shouldn't put drivers at increased risk. The diversion is only for cars and light commercial vehicles. If people drive in a safe and sensible manner appropriate for the road conditions they are experiencing, then most collisions are avoidable.

True that accident investigations should be carried out but Ludicrous that it should be closed so long though. The sma glen road isnt exactly great, even in good weather. Normally in a fatal the road is shut 6 to 8 hrs. This one is now over 12hrs!

Take HGV's off the road all together and we'll see accident rates and road closures due to jack-knifing plummet. Ok this isn't possible but the last 2trips up the A9 I have witnessed horrendous overtaking by HGV's on the single carriageway sections, cars too I admit. This specific accident looks scarily like it might have been an overtake attempt but obviously I am just speculating.

Overall the fact that there has been a fatality means that it doesn't matter how long it takes to re-open the road, as long as it is made safe and it doesn't happen again. Drive safe everyone.

They wouldn't let anyone who lived between Perth and Dunkeld past the Inveralmond roundabout despite it being north of Dunkeld, that probably caused a lot more problems than necessary. They could also have allowed cars through Dunkeld on the old A9 which comes out north of Jubilee bridge although that probably hadn't been ploughed or gritted. I understand that they need to investigate the accident but they seem to take a lot longer than they used to.

I thought local access was permitted.

They may have eventually but we were turned back along with everyone else. Think the police were fed up telling people no and to move on, no idea who made the decision not to allow local access but as I said previously it must have caused more problems.

Some HGVs and coaches still using the cally to pilochry diversion today, wing mirrors get clipped all over the shop and some major delays due to the impossibility of these vehicles passing each other on the narrow sections of road. wouldn't have said it was too dangerous, just frustrating and selfish on the part of these drivers. but maybe a different story now it is dark and temp dropping.

wow, going by the bbc pics it looks like a pretty serious incident though, not surprised it's taking a while to sort out.

does explain why there's a completely mental ammount of traffic in blairgowrie though, i didn't think glenshee was that busy today.....

It's a difficult call, but at the end of the day someone has died and someone will probably have life changing injuries. Yes it may be a pure accident or it may be someone was clearly to blame.

If it was a member of my family that died as a result of someones actions outside a pub, I would want the investigation to cover every possible angle. Likewise, if a member of my family died on the road and someone was clearly to blame, I'd want them to do a similar investigation.

Diversions are set up, HGV's are being stacked, people will be late.... when you consider someone has lost a father/brother/son/whatever complaining about being a tad late always gets me as somewhat selfish....

Normally....? What is a 'normal' fatal for you...? I can't think of two accidents (or collisions as we are meant to call them) that have been the same.

I would have thought the better idea would be to stack the cars, and let the lorries through to keep the economy going!
Were was the diversion from the North, from Pitlochry to Cally, is that why the queue was so big in Blair tonight? Why didn't they just go through Dunkeld the road would have been as good as the Cally road surely!

If you've eaten today, thank a Farmer

Normal being any serious RTC or Fatal RTC. Both are treated the same by the police/accident investigators Obviously they are all different but the routine and procedure are the same. Normally the only thing that results in the closure being longer than 6-8hrs is the specialists that the police send being elsewhere.at another investigation prior to the one ongoing.

This is just a general thought but I find the notion of discussing this road closure and linking that with further loss of life on the same day as a guy has lost his life fairly distasteful.

No I don't think closing the road endangers lives and the accident should be investigated properly.
