Thule roof bar system installation
Date Posted: 12.13hrs on Fri 11 Feb 11
yesterday i bought a thule roof rack system for my bmw 1 series, assembled it all together last night but my question is what is the easiest way to measure the distance so that it is equal on each side, do i measure from fixing point to fixing point on the roof and have the feet that distance apart any comments and ideas would be appreciated.

i usually eye-ball it,
or loosely fit, get everything in place then tighten up

but - there are several types of thule system, so without knowing which one you have got....?

ah - its like that

you could meaure it up - then i put some small bits of elec tape to mark the position of the feet for next time you put it back on, once you have it sorted

distance between bars depends on what is going on them

I've got the fixpoint system, the way I did it was to tie the bars onto the feet as loosely as possible so they still slide, then attach the feet to the roof. Slide the bar either way, judge it by eye, then firm up all the allen bolts. It'll need tweaks for front/back symmetry. Once it's done you don't need to detach the bars from the feet, just undo the main allen bolt on each side and each bar comes off in one go smiling smiley

The ones on the bed of my pick-up are squint.... it's really annoying looking in the mirror and seeing one stick out further than the other.

I must sort it - one day.
