Overland Travel by 4x4 summer 2011

Any 4x4 owners doing any overland travel this summer?

Over the last year I have been modifying a 11yr old Toyota Landcruiser for a trip down to the Spanish Pyrenees, followed by upto 600km of offroad trails through and over the mountains. Driving upto mountain passes 2500m in altitude, through ski resorts and remote valleys with ford crossings. Hope to also do some mountain biking en-route and in Andorra.

Lots of modifications to the landcruiser:
All-terrain tyres, front 9000lbs winch + hand-winch, 4x 10,000 recovery points, waffleboards, land-anchor, safari snorkel, rocksliders and tree-fenders (sill and side impact protection), underbody sump and gearbox & transfer protection skid-plates, 40mm lifted Heavy-duty suspension, split charge system and auxillary battery, boot-storage drawer & shelving system and lighting, onboard power 240v 500w inverter, extra 12v sockets, USB charging point, large 12v aircompressor, 50l portable fridge/freezer on slide, side awning for shade and shelter when camping. 2x20l drinking water storage bladders.

The routes:

vehicle photos to follow!

dont want to add up cost of mods... but nearly all sourced second-hand - or some good bargains e.g. winch, splitcharge and inverter - saved over 1k on those alone , or fabricated by myself - cutting steel and welding etc

and with camping, the mods all cheaper than 2 weeks in a hotel for sure!
will be used for a few UK trips Greenlaning in april/may and other years to come - thoughts of Morocco and Eastern Europe for future trips.

Some photos of winch, snorkel, home-made rock sliders (25kg per side! so not like the flimsy sidesteps you see on 4x4), and homemade skid plates/underbody protection plates

and lower part of boot storage system drawers, dog guard, 500w inverter, power points, Waeco fridge/freezer and and DIY slide for it
(have since built wooden box to go round fridge/freezer) and this weekend building shelving to left

The mods might be cheaper than 2 weeks in a hotel, but the fuel to get it down there? tongue sticking out smiley

aye - but its not a holiday - its an "adventure" !

yes a lot of DERV will be consumed... cheaper in spain though!
ferry from Hull > Zebruggee helps too, airmiles paid for all but 10 of that.

hell of a lot more fun than 2 weeks on a beach or caravaning

assuming nothing breaks... as some of the trails are too rough for SUV e.g. freelanders/rav4 etc

The highland 4x4 club are planning a jolly to Morocco this year.

If I didn't have plans to visit Mickey Mouse I'd be heading that way too.

My last jolly

Hi

Sounds like a top trip! Dolomites for me climbing this summer.

From experience, I'd not expect the Waeco to hold out any longer than a day on a 100AH battery. Friends had one in their van in France last year, and when its hot out, the compressor is having to work hard. They even had an 80W solar panel on their roof, but the waeco was pulling more night+day than the panel could supply. Same panel with Scottish sunlight and ambient temps coped fine (longer days, lower temps, even if most of the days were overcast!).

Rooftop tent I spy Colin.
Iceland! - hard to get there these days...

I thought of getting one, but am going to try the ground tent this year to see how it is. For Morocco I would want a RTT, to keep above beasties and setting a tent up on sand is no fun.
hopefully a normal tent is ok for spain.

interesting about the fridge & battery Nigel. I have a 100ah auxillary battery, and 100 ah main starter battery. the split charge system relay will stop the main being run down during stopovers.
We will be driving most days, so should keep the battery charged for running the waeco overnight.
havent fitted a hookup for campsites, but thats an option.

Dolomites - are you driving there with the van? climbing?

I love the tent.... It was a bit of an investment but well worth it. Up and down in seconds. It has it's own mattress and the pillows and duvets stay inside when you fold it up.

@telemarker

We are flying this year and camping rather than taking the van. Fuel has gotten too expensive. plan is climbing and via ferrata.
