To Mongolia and beyond!
Date Posted: 16.10hrs on Sun 15 Apr 12
Ten thousand miles from Aberdeen to Mongolia across countless mountain ranges, punishingly hot deserts and some of most spectacularly remote terrain on the planet… This summer, I’m part of a team entering the Mongol Rally!

If you want to laugh at our choice of vehicle, scoff at our ludicrously ambitious route, ridicule our cheesy group photos or even, just maybe, find your charitable side and throw some money towards our chosen charities then be sure to have a look at the links below.

I'm not sure how many of you use Facebook but potential sponsors seem keen on us having as many "likes" as possible! We're also giving away prizes to those who have liked us in the run up to the Rally - not least some tickets to see the Final of the Women's Beach Volleyball at the London Olympics!

Hoping this isn't too shameless a plug!

Good luck - although I think you should swap the fiat with your 80-series!

it will be an amazing trip
i look forward to following progress

Thanks!

The 80 would have made it too easy! Though I'll probably regret saying that when the Doblo gets bogged down in the middle of a Mongolian river crossing...

Question is though, are you taking skis and do you plan on getting in a sneeky wee tour somewhere along the way?
You do say 'Mountain Ranges' in your route description, surely a chance here to bag something tasty...?

The Doblo will be a fine vehicle I had one for 8 years, It was a great machine (a bit ugly though)

Haha, even at over 15000ft in the Pamirs I think a tour might be stretching things in late July/early August!

I'm quite impressed with the Doblo so far, it's the 1.2 diesel so is unbelievably slow but it's good fun to drive and has loads of room...

C'mon dude, think outside the (four wheeled) box!
If the box is slow at sea level, it's going to be a bundle of fun at altitude.
You're going to have a ball and I'm looking forward to hearing some of the tales when you get back. Stay in touch bud.

are you modifying the van at all? and what spares are you taking?
guess a lot of water - is getting fuel going to be an issue?
and lots of border red-tape and visas?

makes my landcruiser seem overkill for greenlaning in May and Alps in March
but then again i will be driving trails that would destroy a Doblo...

fitted rack and rooftent at weekend

Em... Planned modifications to the Doblo - A set of sturdy 8 ply van tyres, an extra spare wheel, a roof rack and a home made sump guard...

The Doblo has a pretty big fuel tank and is ridiculously economical (even driving it flat out I've yet to see the readout show less than 52 mpg!) so we've got a 600 or 700 mile range already. Still considering sticking a couple of Jerry Cans on the roof rack just in case though...

As for spares, just the usual consumables plus lots of tie wraps and duct tape!

The Visas have been the hardest (and most expensive...) bit so far but thankfully all the forms are now filled in and sent off.

The Cruiser looks good, when we've scraped the sump for the hundredth time on what passes for roads over there I'm sure we'll be jealous of your ground clearance!

That should be enough for every eventuality.

Just in case I would add G clamp, jubilee clips and some string.

Got zip-ties and duct tape ready for packing for my UK laning and alps trip
and filters, also a load of tools, fridge/freezer, hand winch, waffles, recovery gear

600-700 mile range of Doblo is very impressive - many 4x4 with extra longrange fuel tanks would only just manage that!, guess you will need a few spare fuel filters in-case of dodgy fuel?

Yeah, got a few fuel filters just in case - buying dodgy diesel from roadside shacks means we'll almost certainly need them!

As for recovery gear - a good shovel, a long tow rope and plenty of rubber matting is about all we've got room for. I've got a tirfor handwinch but it's too big/heavy and, more importantly, too valuable to ditch in Ulan Bator.

Yep, got g clamps, jubilee clips and several miles of bailing twine!

After dealing with the 25 mpg of the Land Cruiser, the doblo almost seems to run on fresh air! I've been using it to run around locally and the fuel gauge almost seems broken...

Take a spare oil filter, the filter started leaking oil on my one twice! never did it after I started using after market parts instead of genuine fiat spares. Mine rattled up and down about 4-5 miles of dirt track almost every day for the 8 years we had it and the undertray broke and hung off, zippers fixed that. The boot lock mechanism filled up with dust and dirt and regularly stopped working ie would not stay shut and needed to be tied shut and then taken out and cleaned and lubricated to get it to work again. Only other serious problem I can remember was the EGR valve seized and made the car dangerously slow when cold.
