Frozen in Time
Date Posted: 09.05hrs on Wed 13 Dec 06
Just started reading this book: Frozen in Time

[theweatheroutlook.com]

great read about past winters, notably 1947, 1962-63, and 1978-79

if we had a winter like those, in this day and age we would be stuffed!
makes my heart bleed reading about all the snow
but if it happened now it would be more fustrating as we wouldnt be able to ski on it!, due to access problems etc

I think we'd all become cross country skiers!

For a few weeks there'd be no lifts operating but for those living close to the hills with touring gear we'd have them to ourselves.(Assuming we could get enough food to keep the energy levels up!)

Also wouldn't be able to get in to work - damn!

Ah the memories - 3rd June 1979 full length Cas, spring snow, mogules on the gunbarrel in wall to wall sunshine. They closed for the season the next day but with more snow left than they have actually had on many occasions when they've operated in recent winters.

That was a winter when the Ciste was in full swing. You could ski right back to the base station under the chair, and the Anoach poma had opened for its first season in the December (78)

Aye canny steep. I've walked up there a fair few times!

I was stuck in London at uni but did get out to N Wales a couple of times. All the gullies on Tryfan were well banked up. We did them all in one day.

If it helps, I was 18 during the winter of 78-79 and was learning how to handle an ice-axe in the "Arrochar Alps".

I was actually around for the previous great winter of 62-63, but have no memory of it....but that was the 60's for you! - (If you can remember them, you weren't really there.)

Does that ease the pain? winking smiley

mathematical solution:

2006 - x = 1900 + x

x = ?

So that day in June on the gorm you were 25.

Well now the cat is well and truly out of the bag.
And yes you don't look a day over 40!
Must be all that mountain air.

Yep I was 25- might have known you'd come up with a formula Paul cool smiley

Anyway your and II's kind words are much appreciated smiling smiley

I can actually remember the winter of 62-63. I was a kid in Edinburgh and my very sensible parents decided to put central heating in during the autumn of 62 which was so good after coal fires in all the rooms.

We lived at the foot of a steep road with a bend that had the wrong camber. I had great fun watching all the cars either failing to get up or skidding coming down. It was during that winter that we woke to a loud crash. On investigating it we discovered that a coal lorry had skidded coming down the hill, gone through the hedge along the front of our neighbours garden, and deposited it's load in the middle of his front lawn. What was ironic was that our neighbour was a coal merchant. As you can imagine the ' carrying coals to Newcastle 'saying was much used when the rest of the street discovered the accident.

I also remember skating several times during that winter on Linlithgow Loch which was frozen solid

I was born in January 1978 and many times my old dear has told me the story of it starting to snow one day in February, to which my dad uttered the immortal line
