Stories of 2006...
Date Posted: 12.06hrs on Sun 31 Dec 06
Just wanted to wish everyone on Winterhighland a Happy New Year and here's to a fantastic 2007. I am hoping to see as many of you as possible next year, maybe starting on Tuesday if the snowy weather holds!

Seeing as it is the end of 2006, just wondered what everyone thought were the most important stories of 2006. Maybe not what we now think are the most important, but those that we will look back on as the most important...

My 10 would be in no particular order...

1. The publication in European newspapers of cartoons of Mohammed and the backlash amongst Muslims
2. Not strictly in 2006, but the first human face transplant
3. The victory of Romano Prodi over Berlusconi in the Italian General Election
4. 2006 keeping up the trend of being yet another warmest year on record
5. The victory of the Democratic Party in taking both Houses of Congress essentially negating Bush's powers
6. The major research article in Science stating that unless protective measures were undertaken there would be virtually nothing left to fish in 50 years
7. The murder of the former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko in London with suspicions of involvement by the Russian Government
8. The execution of Saddam Hussain after his conviction in an Iraqi court
9. And a couple from the sporting world, the retirement of Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in the history of Formula One
10. The victory of the Europeans over the Americans in the Ryder Cup

Any thoughts? winking smiley
