Why not spanish or one of the other major languages that are spoken?

I think it is changing. Some schools are starting to teach Spanish or Chinese. Both much more useful than French.

Once you get older, it's virtually impossible to master another language (I started learning Japanese at age 30!). You have to start young - very young. In Scandinavia they teach English from day one at school - and they speak it better than us!

It would be great to see all the native British languages taught in local schools (Cornish for example is virtaully dead).

Maybe the education were afraid tae teach Gaelic in our schools as they didnae want tae be letting the Scottish find out more about their history and claming their own culture back, same whith the cornish.. I believe Welsh is still strong in Wales..

Same wi history in schools, they tried to teach us all brit history, we got loads of crap aboot the romans, not about them being scared of the Scottish, more about the roads and all they done for britain.... Plus there is to much paperwork and learning out books in Schools, there should be more hands on practical learning. I think ya learn more that way...

Edit: And scrap these catholic and potestant schools and pit them aw in one, yal have a few terms of pure violence, but then it'll aw calm doon and be better for society as a whole..

Maybe they were teaching you facts? The Scottish didn't live in Northern Britain during the Roman Empire. The Ancient Britons did, they lived across the entire Island. And had done for millenia.

One of the first mentions of the Scots was in AD 642 by The English historian Bede, "Oswald, king of Northumbria, had brought under his dominion all the nations and provinces of Britain, which are divided into four languages, to wit, those of the Britons, the Picts, the Scots and the English."

From Wikipedia:
The Scottish people are a nation and an ethnic group indigenous to Scotland. As an ethnic group, Scots are a composition of groups such as Picts, Gaels, Brythons and others.

This thread reminds me of one of Stewart Lee's shows when he discussed how he discovered that "Braveheart Wallace and Robert The Bruce" were writing gay poetry to each other in their mother tongue which was gaelic which literally translates into gay tounge". I mind quite a few folk in the audience looking wound up, but he said he was more than allowed to discuss this because he'd discovered that his father was born in Scotland and therefore he was infact "half Scotch".

It also brought up a line when he was being lectured by a racist, homophobic London taxi driver and he corrected the driver on some misguided points - to which the driver responded with "Well, you can prove anything with facts, can't you?"

Anyone watch the Simpsons? There was an excellent episode in which Lisa uncovers the truth about Jebadiah Springfield, the patriot and frontiersman that founded their town. At first she tries to expose him for what he was, but in the end realises she doesn't want to destroy Springfield's myth - a man of, and for the people.

Sometimes, for some people, fallacy is more important than the facts.

From The Simpsons:

Groundskeeper Willie: "Brothers and sisters are natural enemies! Like Englishmen and Scots! Or Welshmen and Scots! Or Japanese and Scots! Or Scots and other Scots! Damned Scots! They ruined Scotland!"

Skinner: "You Scots sure are a contentious people."

Willie: "You just made an enemy for life!"

(replace Willie with GW as required!)

err no.

Like I said, don't let fallacy get in the way of facts. It may suit some to imagine a romantic northern tribe living peacfully since time began till the Romans, than Anglo Saxons, then the English came to spoil the party.

People have been living on this Island for a quarter of a million years Grow. The present "border" isn't anything real. No you see it, now you don't. The Kingdom Of Scotland, has existed for such a tiny portion of the time that the indiginous peoples have lived here, together.

The border is a purely political entity, created by politicians, maintained by politicians, for their ends. British people have died for it - Scots, Welsh, English, and it has appeared and disappeared and moved north and south. Now the SNP are fighting over it, and fighting over a line in the damned sea too.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

And the big question still is what did the romans do in Scotland, bar get a HIDING??!!!!

I read some of yer link and there does not seem tae be much "fact" in there, an awful lot of sugests.. A lot of stuff after the roman time with people saying this and that, but the Romans wrote the bible(FACT<LOL).. And archeology, Aye sometimes they get it right, but thats aw theory tae, I've seen hunners of the shows when they pull a broken pot or a wee arrow tip the ground, and the next minute they are saying there used tae be people that would sit here and the weans would be here and the animals over there, and they have drawings wi all sorts of shit going on.. AW this fae one broken pot!!!

England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, are ya sure we are all the same with the identity and culture and history? really sure?

Why should the Scottish kids be taught about the Romans when they never done anything here? That was the question!!! Why not teach them more about William Wallace, aw the wars including between england?

I always hear aboot folk going on aboot these forts and how they should be protected because they are roman, a few near me.. But they dont say why there was a fort there and what they were protecting.. Softie romans fae the mighty warrior ones that roamed this free land...

>you are joking?

Nope.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

Ps, the oil is ours. If there is nothing there and its all running out then why do the brits want it, we'll have back!! Its the old saying " less is more" less of us than in a union(parasite) and that means more money fo us and to develop the best wee country.. And we can all live together, u said we used tae above and the kinkdom of Scotland etc, so the union has been for 300 sorry years, thats nothing soon tae change, move on... And its happening, there was an election there and the word is the tide is turning...

You can't compare pre-history to modern times, shall we all go back to caves and have wooden spears as the highest technology so we wont have need for any nations, states or borders or whatever? eye rolling smiley

Oh and this is a thread about music festival - damnit!

So children become educated about the wider world?

So let's stop teaching about the Egyptians too, and Christopher Columbus - because it had nothing to do with The Scots? Grow - what a sad, lame argument. Schools should teach children about the world - yes teach us about our history too - but our history is intertwinned with everyone else's.

What do you want to learn about William Wallace? That he slaughtered Scottish women and children and burned villages to the ground that didn't agree with his fight? Or the blue warpaint bullshit you see on Braveheart?

Was there that much different from a peasant forced to fight for the English King and the peasant forced to fight for Wallace or Bruce? I'm sure these peasants and serfs from both sides of the border had much more in common with each other than the Kings or Knights they were fighting for - Don't you think they would much rather have been at home with their wives, working their fields?

Alan wrote:

I'm trying to put this in perspective. Scotland, as an independent nation, existed for 864 years - from 843 to 1707. For the vast majority of the time that this Island has been inhabited, Scotland never existed. Some would like to drive a wedge between the peoples of this island saying those in the north are different, when they are not different. The cuture may be different, but no different from that of an East Anglian and a Cornishman, or a Londoner and a Yorkshireman.

This is why Scottish Nationalism is curious to me? There is the thin veneer of acceptance (which I don't believe for a second) to others that are not ethnic Scots that goes something like this:

"We want separation from those south of the border, because we are somehow different (even though history can prove otherwise) because of this arbitrary line on a map. However, anybody, from any culture, including those south of the border are welcome here. Anyone can be a Scot!"

Weird.

There was a very good line on Radio 4's Any Questions regarding the SNP's relative success at the last election. Scottish Nationalism was likened to Quebec in Canada - A constant whinge in the corner that never goes away,

It's funny how these things change.

Going back a dozen posts, our current batch of victims of a disjointed education system are complaining of having to learn Gaelic in School.

Looking back 35 years to my own education, in a school just a few miles from where these lads are, the education department had "imported" us a headmaster from somewhere quite far south. We were mercilessly belted for speaking even a single word of gaelic within the school grounds. There's a whole generation of Highlanders who like William now, regret a missed opportunity to learn the tongue at the right time.
The funny thing was, the whole village bought into the view that "Gaelic is bad, it is the language of the uneducated".
The headmaster was a figure who even as a raw incomer, was given great respect and his line was followed unthinkingly.
Spoken English was aspirational !!!
