OUCH! Twisted My Knee sad smiley
Date Posted: 15.02hrs on Wed 21 Feb 07
Ok so I have only actually been boarding 4 times so far. 2 sets of lessons and then a 1 hour recreational board and, last night, a 2 hour recreational board.
I love boarding and although I am only just starting (at 31 - all those years I have missed!) I can't get enough of it.

However last night I was seriously getting the hang of it and getting faster and faster as my confidence and skill grew with each run. That was until 15 mins before the end. I caught a toe-side edge at speed and face planted - big time. Luckilly it was on a part of the Cas slope that has a big build up of snow so it didn't hurt. It must have looked really comical as I actually had to sit there and scrape the snow out of my eyes before I could see.
Now I said I didn't hurt myself - well I was wrong. As soon as I got on my feet I felt a real twitch of pain in my left knee, on the inside just to the side of the actual kneecap. I got to the bottom only to find that the pain really was getting worse.
I called it a night at that point and went to the bar for a couple of beers. After finishing the beers my knee had stiffened up a great deal. I can actually now remember hearing a "click" from my knee when I fell.
Well it is safe to say that I didn't get much sleep as I woke up at 2.00am in total pain and the Mrs complained of me tossing and turning all night so I slept on the sofa. I am 6'3" so have to sleep with my knee bent. That alone was a real task as my knee was very painful and very stiff. This morning I was unable to straighten my leg to get up.
So I am sat here typing and have noticed that my knee is proper goosed and it stiffens up after 10 mins in any position. Going to the Docs in a min but I was wondering what part of the knee I may have hurt? A ligiment maybe? MUscle strain?
I just know that I can't climb stairs properly and twisting it is excruiating pain.

Cruel blow bud!

I'd go tae a few diffo docs, i wiped ma knee oot years back coming aff a scrambler and one doc said one thing(fluid) then another said this and that and on and on,so I went tae a physio I know, "ole Dirty Bruce", and as physios do, he rubbed some stuff on it then stuck a lamp on it and it was sorted, the only time it comes back is when I kick a fitba full throttle,(or a gypo whacks it wi a bat)

My guess from your description is that you have developed some serious inflamation, because the pain built up over a period of time. - If it was a torn ligament I think the pain would have been instant. - Maybe somebody knows better?

If you have swelling & pain, then take the max dose of Anti-Inflams available, while you wait to see a Doc. - If it's very bad, go to A&E.

There are better Anti-Inflams available under prescription, and it might be worth getting those sooner rather than later. - I'll PM you something else.

Two weeks ago I hit some rocks on the Summit run at Nevis and faceplanted. I landed on the rocks on my knees. They were sore the right one in especially so after 3 or 4 minutes I put my skis back on and skied for another hour or so..
When I got home had a look at the wound. I had skinned my right knee and it was a bit sore.
Next morning to stiff to go back and ski again sad smiley
3 days later I had a bruise starting mid thigh and ending near my ankle around most of my leg.
It looked a lot worse than it was and was skiing again after only 4 days smiling smiley
So don’t loose heart after a couple of days it may be better smiling smiley

go slide....

Bigred, you've hopefully heard from GP by now.
Best guess is a tweaked ligament that will benefit from the following aggressive treatment:

Repeated ice pack work, 6-10 cycles of an ice pack, wrapped in a tea towel to prevent burning your skin. On for 10 mins, off for ten.
Maximum dose of anti-inflammatories, eg Ibuprofen BP (cheaper than Nurofen)
What do you weigh..? If you're heavier than say 12stone and don't suffer from Asthma or any gut problems, ask GP how much you can exceed the recommended dose.
Find the hard ligament with your fingers and manipulate, starting gently and work up to toughing it out.
Rest. Keep it warm aside from the ice.
Keep at it for several days.
If there's no obvious damage according to GP yet no improvement in a couple of days, consider going to see a sports physio soon. Better to pay for one or two early sessions than get a problem that becomes entrenched and much hard to fix.

Thanks for the advice guys, it sounds like all of you have had similar injuries at one time or another.
Hustler - thats exactly what the doc said to me, to the letter more or less.

I got some Dicloflex 50mg anti-inflams and I think they have done the trick. I have also got a compression bandage on and have spent most of the day just resting with the knee raised up. Haven't tried the ice thing yet (I defrosted the freezer yesterday so no ice!) but if it continues to get better at this rate I should hopefully not have to.
Feels a lot better than it did this morning, this morning I couldn't even straighten my leg out!! I have also managed to walk upstairs "normally" so that is a huge plus as it REALLY hurt to do that earlier. Its also stopped collapsing under me which again is a good sign.
I have just remebered today (after I had been to the docs) that I have private healthcare through work that I have never used and am paying for. If I find that I am still having painful issues later this week I should be able to get a sports physio with the healthcare - I hope.

I just hope I can sleep tonight as last night it was fine as I went to sleep but bloody hell did I know when I turned in my sleep - woke up in serious pain each time and a horrible sweat!!

Fingers crossed I will be better for Monday AND we get snow grinning smiley

Thanks again to all for the advice.
Andy.

WOOHOO!!! Knees on the mend. It is 100% better today than it was yesterday. I have mobility and can walk fine now - still a little limp but it isn't twitching pain like it was.
These Dicloflex is great stuff and the compression bandage must have helped as well.
So hopefully I will be able to go on Monday for a 3 day slide but now the question is where. Looks like Cairngorm so far as Glenshee is looking pretty written off. Unless of course we get the mother of all dumps over the weekend with more on Monday.

But with the forecasts at the moment it is looking more likely that I will win the lottery at the weekend sad smiley

When I used Diclofenac last it was very effective as an anti-inflam but it has side effects. It took a few days to build up but I got belly ache and ended up stopping the stuff as I was too bloated and sore.

I'd still use the ice if you're within 36 hours or so of the injury.

Did something similar on me teles 10 days ago and am nearly fixed now.
Then fell off me bike on a greasy diesel spill on the road on Monday morning..!
Got a couple of lurid bruises to show for it.
Ain't life fun?

Sorry to drag this od thread up again but I thought it best rather than starting a new one.
Basically my leg is more or less fine for walking on but i still have a bit of pain. If I sit for a while in the same position or when i wake up in a morning my knee is still really painful till I have moved about a bit on it. Now I have been back to the Docs about it and all he said was that i should now start to excercise on it. Well I have and it doesn't appear to be getting any beter.
I am a little worries as my other knee is also a bit stiff and sore in the morning. I did bash the other knee when i was up on the Gorm but nothing serious and not a twisting like I did to my left knee.

Another thing is that i was thinking that the basic set up of bindings won't work for me. Reson being

I was wondering if i have maybe done something a little more serious than first thought? Myabe i didn't rest it for long enough? I just think that 4 weeks for the recovery should have been enough.
Should I go see a physio?

To be sure to get it treated effectively and to ensure prompt recovery the only sure way unfortunately is to pay for the treatment yourself!
Find a sports injury clinic in your area - bound to be a few in the boro. It'll cost though, expect initial consultation to be around £30 and then probably £20 per subsequent visit.
Even if your doc referred you to NHS phys. there'll be a decent wait to get seen.

Consider that sports physio. It's well worth looking at the local football clubs, lower-mid level pro clubs will have links to a good local sports specialist.
Four weeks isn't that long really. Have a careful think back to how much mobility and pain you had, say 5 days after the injury. Tendon and ligament damage can easily take two- three months or more to fix properly. Often what you've actually done is put a little tear in the sleeve which covers and allows the ligament to slide; it has a very poor blood suply and takes time to fix. hurts like hell but isn't long term harmful. In the long run should fix fine. If you'd done real damage to the ligament itself, you'd probably not be walking on it. Be careful and good luck...

Thanks for the advice guys.
Paul - I have private health care through work and I assume that I should be able to get a decent physio to see my knee on this health care - do you think thats a fair assumption?

Also I forgot to finish my post off earlier as my boss walked into my office and I had to get rid of the post quickly.
What I ws going to say is that I have funny knees anyways. WHat I mean is that I am quite badly 'knock knee'ed'. If I stand with my legs together my knees don't point forwards - they point out over (left points say 10 degrees left and the right 10 degrees right), I was thinking that the pre-set bindings on a hire board may not be set up very well for my knees.
I have had a similar issue before with my SPD's on my bike whereas I had a terrible pain in my left knee as I had the angles set incorrectly. That got pretty painful as well! Once I adjusted the pedals the pain stopped happening and hasn't happened again since. Just a thought that may affect my knees.

Oh and I am supposed to be heading up to the Nevis Range on Monday - do you thik it will be ill advised with my knees as they are?

Who would have thought you would still bounce at 30!!!

Good effort!

I tweaked my knee in January, two days into a 6 day-er at Tignes Le Lac. Coming off the chair with me in-between a boarder on the left and a skier on the right, we agreed the boarder would pull off to the left and asking the skier to pull to the right just give the two of us some room. We'll he jumps off earlier than us (I normally use the edge of the chair to push off from) then stops right in our path. I manage to scrub so my mate can get past, but then I catch the board in the snow and my front legs twists.

To make matters worse, I'd just lost the in-step strap on my back-foot binding so I had to board all the way down the hill on my stomp board with a gammy knee on my the only foot that was harnessed in. Ended up toe-edging down most of the way.

Pain wasn't so bad until later in the evening (i.e. would only hurt if I tweaked it). Got the wife to look at it (she deals with sports injuries) and she recommended a double-dose of ibuprofen. Took the inflamation down nicely I took a half day out. Was fine for the rest of the holiday.

She said what others have been saying - if it was a tear then I'd have known about it ...

I still feel it from time to time (mainly climbing stairs). Just need to make sure I diligently do my stretches smiling smiley

I know what you mean about starting late as well. I've just hit 31 and only got my first board in November.

I have funny knees caused by rolling my feet when I walk. It was causing me all sorts of problems with my back, legs and knees when walking. I now have insoles fitted by a podiatrist and it is working so far. I have to wear them whenever I'm out the house otherwise I start getting pains in my feet and legs. I have another set of insoles in my ski boots.

Maybe you should also see a podiatrist about your knockin knees. If you have your own snowboarding boots consider getting custom made insoles
