Scott Macartney crash in Kitzbühel
Date Posted: 22.06hrs on Sun 20 Jan 08
Did anyone else see this on Ski Sunday tonight?

Ouch!

It looks like he's alright according to news reports, but it was sobering to watch

i did indeed see that.
Glad to hear he's not seriously injured. He's a lucky boy, his head hit snow hard twice

I hadn't seen it but what a crash. Indeed he is very lucky if he isn't seriously injured.

It reminded me of Antoine Deneriaz's crash two years ago. He has just stopped his competition career at the end of 2007 after he said he never completely recovered from this crash in 2006. After the crash he was always afraid when starting and skiing a downhill. You can watch the video here :

Talking of crashes, did anyone see the ski jumper from Norway? on 90m hill who took off and 1 of his skis fell off. Ended up upside down flying through air onto his back. He survived but how i do not know.

I have heard that chin-straps on various sporting headgear are fixed with a restricted force, so that the helmet will release, rather than taking your head off or slitting your throat...?

Could that be it.?

On that first clip it looked as if the helmet was actually broken rather than just the strap giving in. At the sort of speeds involved you would think something that offers similar protection as a motorcycle helmet would be better suited. I use a sweet helmet which I think is the best money can buy for my kayaking and for my snowboarding, however I am not sure I would want to take a 90mph impact wearing it.

Recovering with no memory of the crash. I have seen first hand what head impacts at that sort of speeds can cause and I am convinced he is a very lucky man.

Yeah, the SkiSunday commentator reckoned that the helmet had cracked open. He was doing what, 100mph? Yikes.
