Cairngorm Chairlift article, 23rd December 1961
Date Posted: 23.43hrs on Tue 22 Jan 08
Here's a fascinating newspaper article titled "EXCELSIOR ON CAIRNGORM", published in The Scotsman (in the days when they reported snowsports fairly!) on Saturday, December the 23rd 1961.

Written by J A Kerr Hunter (author of "Ski-ing in Britain", Nelson 1963) it looks forward to the opening of the Cairngorm Chairlift that very day and gives a detailed history of the building of the lift.

I wasn't around at the time (I'm not that long in the tooth!) but luckily my dad, a compulsive collector of Scottish newspaper cuttings, cut it out of the newspaper and kept it.

Here it is - I hope you find it as fascinating as I did when I found it smiling smiley

Interesting.

So, is the plaque commemorating Jean of the demolished "Jean's Hut" still on the mountain?

I don't know, it could be there under the snow or elsewhere... I'll bet Alan of someone here knows the full story though!

Jean's Hut was moved to Coire an Lochan, before eventually being demolished. I'm not sure if that was through it's poor condition or was it done at the time when several other high level bothies were removed.

IIRC from various stories I heard about the hut, the Plague was at one time moved to the Alpine Garden, what happened to it I don't know, I certainly haven't consciously been aware of seeing it the garden in recent times.

Anyone?????

Jean's Hut appears on my 1974 1:25,000 map of High Tops of Cairngorm. - Can't help with the plaque.

I still often use fairly old maps, but have scored off many refuges which have been taken down, alas.

I noticed that the area we now refer to as "mid-station" is described in the article as the "focus" of snosports at Cairngorm. - Skiing to carpark is described as "often" available, but not always.

Does the 1961 description sound so very far away from the current situation.? - Fascinating artice from many aspects.

HTH the point about the mid-station is valid, in terms of vertical it's not even 1/4 way up station and I think the reference to it as the "middle" is actually quite negative in the perception it gives when reference is made to "top to middle riding", that gives 1300ft of vertical, compared to 1650ft to the Daylodge.

Does this postcard show Jean's hut in it's original position?

It's a good indication of what the Zig Zags have done to the Gunbarrels snow catching capacity though!

Barry, I know where you mean. It isn't about Jeans Hut though, its a memorial to two climbers who died there in the 1920s .

Their story is told in the 'The Black Cloud'. I find out some more details.
